On Sunday, July 29, 2007at 1517, Volunteers with the New Roads Fire Department along with Pointe Coupee Fire District 3 responded to 607 Martin Dr in New Roads for a reported house fire with person(s) still in the structure. The first unit arrived at 1523 to find heavy smoke showing from the structure. Crews immediately established a water supply from a fire hydrant and stretched an attack lines. A crew started performing an attack on the fire while a crew made entry to search for victims while a third crew started ventilating the structure by removing the windows and removing the vents on the roof. The search of the structure for victims found that there was no one in the house and that the fire was mostly contained to the utility room with minor extension of fire into the kitchen and attic. There was moderate smoke damage throughout the house and minimal water damage. Fire department personnel assisted in the salvage of the occupant’s personal belongings and removal of water. The fire apparently started in the area of the cloths dryer. The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the occupants with shelter as the house is uninhabitable. Fire Department units cleared the scene at 1754. No injuries occurred during the fire, the high temperature took there toll on the fire department personnel. Acadian Ambulance Service stood by at the scene in case they were needed. Thank you to the neighbors for all the support of cold drinking water. Photos are compliments of David Jarreau.
